Colleges with Native American Mascots (as of 2002)
This list includes all colleges using American Indian forms of representation as of 2002. As you can see from the current nicknames and mascots listed for each college below, many institutions have switched to non-Indian forms of representation since 2002. Some colleges did so voluntarily, but others did not drop their Indian nicknames or switch mascots until a 2005 NCAA ruling.
The NCAA state stated in August 2005 that "nicknames or mascots deemed 'hostile or abusive' would not be allowed on team uniforms or other clothing" in postseason tournaments. The NCAA added 18 sports teams with Indian forms of representation to a banned mascots list. However, a few NCAA schools (e.g., Central Michigan, Florida State, Illinois, Utah) received formal support from tribes in their regions and continue to use tribe-specific Native American nicknames today. The NCAA has granted exceptions for these schools and removed them from the banned list.
